さて、後半。
その後の僕の生活
彼が日本を発ってからも、TEDxSeedsや、ある企業のプレゼン資料のデザインなど、いろんなことをして日々を送っていた。
といっても、僕も学生だし例の就職活動とやらをしなくてはいけない。けれど僕は、2010年の1月中旬までなにも就職活動的な事をしていなかった。というか、したいと思える企業がなかったというのが本音。自分でフリーランスでSelf-managementをしようと考えていた。
ただ一つ面白そうと思ったGoogle一社だけ、アプライはしたものの、面接が終わった後のメールで、営業とかビジネス業務といった感じではなく、UXとかWeb関連のポジションがあればよかったのにね!といった返信が返ってきた。面接でも「広告営業はしたくない」とかなんとか調子に乗ったことをしゃべっていたので、そういわれても仕方がなかった。実際新卒にはビジネス関連職といった枠しかなく、僕の興味のあったWebとかUX関連のポジションは最初からなかった。
といったこともあり、自分で頑張ろうと、友達のプロジェクトのウェブサイトを作ったり、2回目のTEDxTokyoの運営に参加したり、TEDxTokyo yzという若者向けのTEDxをTEDxTokyoから一緒の@nafnafが創り、僕とこれもTEDxTokyoから同じでTEDxSeedsでも同じだった@snowbdfreakと共にオペレーション・ディレクターとして運営を成功させたりした。

そんなこんながあって、ほんの少し忙しくしていた2010年5月の中旬、いつもの様にアホみたいに朝早く起きていた僕は、あるtweetを目にした。

最初僕はretweetボタンを押しただけ。彼には2000人以上のfollowerがいるし、誰か手を挙げるだろうとおもった。
でも10分くらいしたとき、興味がふつふつとわいてきた。「誰かっていうか、僕してみたいなぁ」と。

このように何回かTweetが続き、細かい事はメールで話し、この日(5/11)の夜に自分がしてきた事をとなんでインターンしたいのかという動機を書いて送った。
すると、その次の朝に、「で、いつから来れそう？」というメールが来て、インターン決定。あっさり決まりすぎてこの段階では、あんまり人に言えなかった。めちゃめちゃ言いたかったけどw
正直言って、僕は数ヶ月のものだと思っていた。しかしメールを進めると1年半らしい。しかしここで、卒業をしていないとTraineeというJ1 visaはとれないので、Internというvisaで1年という期間に制限されてしまった。(ちなみに卒業見込証では不十分だった。この件でvisaの申請書類の作成が1,2週間のびてしまった…) どちらにしても自分の準備できてない段階であった事は確かだった。ただこのときに頭に浮かんできたのは、Stanfordのポッドキャストで聞いたMarrisa Mayerのこの言葉だった。
Do something you’re not ready to do. In the worst case, you’ll learn something about your limitations.

これは、背中を押してくれた。正直、1ヶ月の滞在はあったけどアメリカにそれ以上住んだ事もないのに、急に行ってインターンなんてビビったけど、限界を知らなくちゃいけない。こんなチャンスはないやろう :)
そしてすぐにvisa取得の話に…
Visaの取得
Visaの取得は大変だった。その理由としてあげられるのがまず時差。ScottがChicago, CICDという国際インターンの書類作成業務か何かを手伝ってくれるエージェンシーがSeattleだったので、メールを送ってもすぐに返ってくる事は少なかったし、CICDに尋ねられた事がScottの方に確認しなくてはいけない事だったりした場合、(例えば、僕の住むところはどうしようとか、)さらに時間がかかったりして正直、時間が無くなっていった。
最初の予定では、7月末には出発する予定で話していたが、6月末の時点でまだ書類はそろっておらず、結局8/15から開始してもらえるように変更してもらった。
全ての書類がそろったよというメールをもらったのが、7/13。そこで発行された番号を元に、SEVISというよくわからないフォームを記入を完了させ、同時に面接の予約も3日後の金曜日に完了させた。予約スケジュールを見たとき、月末までいっぱいだったが、Command + R(更新)の連続して、なんとか金曜日で予約する事ができた。
金曜日の面接も、診療所の受付みたいなガラス越しに5,6分しゃべっただけで終わった。
そして5日後visa到着。
それと平行して、学校の試験とマンションからの転出とかが重なっていたから、結構時間がなかったし、ほんとにバタバタしていた。
何かの終わりは何かの始まりの時。それを考えながら、部屋の掃除も荷物の運び出しも終了しDone :]
という訳で、こんな感じでシカゴに行く事になるのでした :)
